The abbey Saint-Germain of Auxerre

The abbey Saint-Germain is one of the most remarkable historical monuments in the town of Auxerre and a major witness to early medieval Christianity in France. Founded in the 5th century the abbey developed around the tomb of Germain of Auxerre : a revered bishop known for his role in spreading christianity in Gaul.

What makes the abbey particularly exceptional is its carolingian crypt. The origin of the crypt dates back to the 9th century. The underground chapels contain some of the oldest preserved frescoes in France offering rare insight into early medieval art and religious expression. The paintings still reveal scenes of saints and symbolic imagery that reflect the spiritual life of the period.

The abbey church has undergone several transformations over the centuries blending romanesque and gothic architectural elements. Despite damage and reconstruction especially after the French revolution the site retains a powerful sense of history and continuity.

Today the abbey houses a museum that explores the heritage of Auxerre and the surrounding region. Visitors can explore many centuries of history from the earliest foundations to the daily life of medieval monks. This makes the abbey not only a place of worship but also an important part of cultural heritage of Burgundy.
