The cathedral of Bordeaux

The cathedral of Bordeaux is also known as cathedral Saint-André. The monument is the most important landmark in the city and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in southwestern France.

Built between the 11th and 16th centuries the cathedral reflects several phases of construction combining Romanesque foundations with the elegance and grandeur of the Gothic style.

Originally erected on the site of earlier religious buildings the cathedral was gradually enlarged over the centuries. The soaring nave and impressive flying buttresses showcase the technical achievements of medieval builders. The magnificent north portal known as the Royal Portal is particularly admired for its exceptional carvings. Standing beside the cathedral the tower Pey-Berland offers breathtaking panoramic views over the city.

The interior of the cathedral is both majestic and serene. This is were the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII of France occured in 1137. Elegant stained-glass windows and the impressive choir create a peaceful atmosphere that invites visitors to discover centuries of religious and artistic heritage.

Today the cathedral is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. The monument continues to attract visitors thanks to its outstanding architecture and central location in the historic heart of Bordeaux.
