The Ramparts of Beaune

The ramparts of Beaune are among the most well-preserved medieval fortifications in eastern France. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries they once formed a defensive ring around the town protecting it during a period marked by regional conflicts and shifting political powers in Burgundy.

Constructed under the influence of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy the walls were designed with towers and fortified sections that allowed the town to monitor and control access. Although their military role diminished over time much of the structure has survived offering a rare glimpse into medieval urban defense systems.
