シャロン・シュル・ソーヌの大聖堂

The cathedral of Chalon-sur-Saône also known as the cathedral of Saint Vincent is the most important monument in the city and a major example of religious architecture in Burgundy.

The cathedral was built between the 11th and 19th centuries and reflects a combination of romanesque and gothic styles showing how architectural techniques evolved over time.

Originally constructed on the site of earlier religious buildings the cathedral was gradually expanded and modified. Its romanesque elements can be seen in the solid structure and rounded arches while the gothic influence appears in the higher vaults and more detailed decorations. The façade with its twin towers gives the building an imposing and elegant appearance.

The interior of the cathedral has a peaceful atmosphere that reflects its history. Once the center of the diocese of Chalon the cathedral was an important religious center for the region. The elegant design of the chapels is remarkable and unique in France.

Today the cathedral Saint Vincent remains an important symbol of heritage of the city attracting visitors with both its historical significance and its architectural beauty that proudly stands in the heart of the old city. The building has been recently restored. The paintings and the cloister just behind are just marvelous !
