The abbey of Cluny was the most important monastery in Europe and played a major role in medieval times.

Founded in 910 the abbey became the center of a powerful monastic order that influenced religious and political life across the continent.

Cluny experienced its most glorious period between the 11th and the 15th century. Cluny was at that time the largest church in the world showing the wealth and influence of the Benedictine monks.

The abbey followed strict religious rules but it was also known for its artistic and architectural achievements. The church was an impressive example of romanesque architecture with massive stone walls and detailed sculptures.

However much of the abbey was destroyed during the French revolution when many religious buildings were dismantled. Today only part of the structure remains but it still gives visitors an idea of its original size and importance.

The remains of the abbey of Cluny continue to attract tourists and historians. These structures stand as a powerful reminder of the influence of monasteries in shaping medieval European history.

Today the former monastery hosts an engineer school to keep the monument and the city alive all around the year.
