The Pyramid of Couhard is the most intriguing ancient monuments in Autun and a remarkable reminder of the Roman past on the city. Standing on a hillside overlooking the town the stone monument was built during the Roman period probably in the 1st century AD. Although the exact purpose remains uncertain it is widely believed to have been part of a large funerary complex associated with the nearby Roman necropolis.
Rising to a height of over 20 metres the pyramid is constructed from local sandstone and has survived nearly two thousand years despite the loss of its original outer facing. The commanding position offers spectacular views over Autun and the surrounding countryside making it both a historical landmark and a scenic viewpoint.

The mystery surrounding the Pyramid of Couhard continues to fascinate historians and visitors alike. Unlike the pyramids of Egypt it was not a royal tomb but most likely a prestigious funerary monument celebrating the memory and status of an important Roman citizen. The unique shape and remarkable preservation make it one of the rare Roman pyramids still standing in France.
Today the Pyramid of Couhard is an essential stop for anyone wishing to discover the rich Gallo-Roman heritage of Autun. Together with the ancient theatre and temple remains the pyramid offers a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of Augustodunum : one of the most important cities in Gaul under the Roman Empire.
