The Well of Moses in Dijon

The Well of Moses stands on the former grounds of the Chartreuse de Champmol in Dijon and is considered one of the finest masterpieces of medieval sculpture. Created by the renowned Flemish sculptor Claus Sluter the monument reflects the artistic brilliance of the Dukes of Burgundy and remains one of most remarkable historical treasures in Dijon.

Commissioned by Philip the Bold between 1395 and 1405 the Well of Moses originally supported a monumental crucifix at the center of the Carthusian monastery. Although the upper section has disappeared the beautifully carved hexagonal base survives and continues to impress visitors with its exceptional craftsmanship.

The monument features six Old Testament prophets : Moses, David, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Daniel, and Zechariah. Their expressive faces and remarkable attention to detail marked a turning point in Gothic sculpture and influenced generations of European artists.

Today the Well of Moses is a symbol of the rich artistic and religious heritage of Burgundy. A visit offers a unique opportunity to admire one of the greatest works of medieval art while discovering the fascinating history of Dijon.
