The Cathedral of Saint-Maurice is the spiritual and historical heart of Vienne and one of the finest examples of medieval religious architecture in southeastern France. Standing majestically on the banks of the Rhône the cathedral was built between the 12th and 16th centuries on the site of earlier Christian churches reflecting more than four centuries of architectural evolution. Dedicated to Saint Maurice the cathedral has played a central role in the religious and civic life of Vienne for nearly a thousand years.

The building is a remarkable blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The imposing western façade and richly sculpted portals illustrate the gradual transition between these two great artistic styles. The building was the setting for important church councils and royal ceremonies most notably the Council of Vienne held between 1311 and 1312 under the authority of Pope Clement V. During this historic council the Order of the Knights Templar was formally dissolved making the cathedral one of the most significant ecclesiastical sites in medieval Europe.

Despite periods of conflict and the French Revolution the Cathedral of Saint-Maurice has preserved much of its original character. Careful restoration campaigns have protected its remarkable architecture and artistic treasures allowing visitors today to appreciate one of the most important Gothic monuments in the Rhône Valley.

Today the Cathedral of Saint-Maurice remains an active place of worship and one of the principal landmarks of Vienne. The architectural beauty and peaceful setting continue to attract visitors from around the world.
