Il Tempio di Giano

The Temple of Janus is one of the most mysterious and best-preserved Gallo-Roman monuments in Autun. Built during the 1st century AD this impressive sanctuary stands just outside the ancient walls of Augustodunum. Despite its traditional name the temple was almost certainly not dedicated to the Roman god Janus and the identity of the deity worshipped here remains unknown.

Originally rising more than 24 metres high the temple formed the central structure of a vast religious complex. The massive stone walls and carefully crafted masonry illustrate the remarkable architectural skills of Roman builders. The monument reflects the prosperity of Augustodunum and the importance of religion in the daily life of the ancient city.

Although only the central cella survives today the Temple of Janus remains one of the tallest Roman monuments still standing in France. Archaeological excavations continue to improve our understanding of the sanctuary and the ceremonies that once took place here offering valuable insights into the religious and cultural life of Roman Gaul.

Today the Temple of Janus is one of the most remarkable archaeological landmarks in Autun. Surrounded by peaceful countryside the site offers visitors a unique opportunity to admire an exceptional example of Gallo-Roman architecture and to imagine the grandeur of this ancient sanctuary nearly two thousand years after it was built.
