The Place des Quinconces is one of the largest and most impressive public squares in Europe reflecting the grandeur and urban ambition of Bordeaux during the 19th century. Created between 1810 and 1828 on the site of the former Château Trompette the square was designed as a monumental open space overlooking the Garonne and became one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.
The square is especially famous for its magnificent Monument aux Girondins built between 1894 and 1902 in memory of the Girondin deputies who were victims of the French Revolution. Surmounted by a towering column and surrounded by impressive fountains decorated with allegorical sculptures the monument is considered one of the finest examples of late 19th-century public art in Bordeaux.
