The Cité de Carcassonne

The Cité de Carcassonne located in southern France in the Occitanie region is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified cities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its origins date back to Gallo-Roman times and it later became a major stronghold during the Middle Ages due to its strategic position between France and the Iberian Peninsula.

The fortress is famous for its impressive double defensive walls stretching over 3 kilometers and reinforced by 52 towers. This unique structure made Carcassonne one of the most secure cities of its time.

At its heart lies the Château Comtal : a medieval castle offering insight into the military past. The nearby basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus showcases beautiful Gothic and Romanesque architecture.

Restored in the 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc the Cité is now a vibrant historic destination filled with shops and restaurants. Walking through its cobbled streets feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

Today Carcassonne remains a symbol of the medieval heritage of France and attracts visitors from all over the world.
