The Cathedral of Strasbourg

The Cathedral of Strasbourg is one of the greatest masterpieces of Gothic architecture in Europe and the most iconic monument of the Alsatian capital. Built from the 12th to the 15th century the monument combines Romanesque and Gothic influences and reflects the extraordinary artistic and architectural achievements of the Middle Ages.

The cathedral is especially famous for its magnificent pink sandstone façade and its single soaring spire which reaches 142 metres high and made it the tallest building in the world for more than two centuries. The impressive portals and intricate details reveal the exceptional skill of medieval craftsmen. The western façade is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic sculpture in Europe.

Inside visitors can admire the spectacular astronomical clock : a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering. The remarkable stained-glass windows illuminate the nave with vibrant colours. The cathedral also houses the famous Pillar of Angels : an extraordinary Gothic sculpture representing the Last Judgment and the power of divine creation.

Today the Cathedral of Strasbourg remains a major spiritual and historical landmark. Beyond its role as a place of worship the cathedral represents the identity of Strasbourg and the artistic heritage of Alsace. The beauty and exceptional architecture of the cathedral attract millions of visitors from around the world every year.
