The fort Saint-Jean is standing at the entrance to the Old Port and guarding the city for nearly four centuries. Built in 1660 by order of King Louis XIV the fort formed part of a broader effort to strengthen royal authority in Marseille following a period of unrest. Strategically positioned on a rocky promontory overlooking both the Mediterranean and the harbour the fort Saint-Jean played a crucial role in the defence of the city while also symbolizing the power of the French Crown.
The site however has a much longer history than the fort itself. Archaeological remains reveal that this strategic location has been occupied since Antiquity. During the Middle Ages it was home to the Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem from which the fort takes its name. Elements of these earlier structures including the 12th-century Commander Tower and the 15th-century Lantern Tower remain visible today creating a remarkable blend of medieval and classical military architecture.

The imposing stone ramparts and defensive walls reflect the principles of military engineering developed during the reign of Louis XIV. Over the centuries the fort Saint-Jean served various military functions and witnessed many of the key events in the history of Marseille. During the Second World War parts of the fort suffered significant damage before extensive restoration campaigns helped preserve and restore this exceptional monument for future generations.
Today the fort Saint-Jean forms an integral part of the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations). A spectacular footbridge connects the historic fort to the modern building creating a dialogue between past and present. Visitors can explore the historic towers and enjoy breathtaking views of the Old Port and the Mediterranean.
As both a historic monument and a cultural destination the fort Saint-Jean offers a unique opportunity to discover the rich heritage of Marseille. Combining centuries of military and religious history the site remains one of the most treasured in the city.
