Chartreuse de Champmol w Dijon

The Chartreuse de Champmol is one of the most important historical sites in Dijon and a remarkable example of medieval Burgundy. Founded in 1383 by Philip the Bold the Carthusian monastery was built as the dynastic burial place for the powerful Dukes of Burgundy and became a major center of art and spirituality.

The monastery was decorated by some of the greatest artists of the period including the Flemish sculptor Claus Sluter whose masterpiece still stands on the site today. Although much of the original monastery was destroyed after the French Revolution several important monuments have survived offering visitors a glimpse into its former grandeur.

The remaining buildings and sculptures reflect the wealth and artistic excellence of the Burgundian court during the late Middle Ages. The peaceful grounds also provide a unique contrast to the bustling city center making the site both historically significant and enjoyable to explore.

Today the Chartreuse de Champmol remains one of the hidden treasures in Dijon combining history and art in an exceptional setting.
